Turns out, there is actually a very simple thumb of rule to it and one I wish I knew a thousand sighs earlier.

Designer, Micheal Kors (Bless him!) has explained the reason in the these words 

"70 percent of the clothes you own should be meat and potatoes. 30 percent should be icing and fluff—that's color, pattern, shine, and accessories. Too many women get the proportions the other way round, then can't figure out why they can't get dressed."

By meat and potatoes, he means the classic, wardrobe staples like a crisp white shirt, everyday blue jeans, a camel colored pea/trench coat, a black blazer, a neutral colored sweater, black/nude pumps/flats, a structured bag, classic LBD, basic tshirts, solid coloured tops, etc.
